Deep Fried Fair Food, Summer is for light, cold food like fruit dips, yogurt and picnic sandwiches. Right? Not at state fairs, at least, where treats deep-fried to golden perfection reign supreme for summer fair dining.Making its entrance this year, joining other greasy treats like fried Kool Aid, Oreos, pickles and butter, is deep-fried cereal.
ABC News reported that for the San Diego Fair this month, deep-fried cereal debuted for the first time, thanks to “Chicken Charlie” Boghosian. The fried treat is made from a handful of Trix and Cinnamon Toast Crunch dipped in batter and fried to golden perfection. The deep-fried balls are then drizzled in syrup and coated with another layer of cereal before being served to fair patrons.
In fact, Boghosian is responsible for the many deep-fried novelties that have emerged over the years, like Oreos and PB&J. Last year, Boghosian concocted a recipe for fried Kool Aid, which is made with flour, water and Kool Aid powder. He serves his concoctions, which range from deep-fried avocado to frog legs at Chicken Charlie’s, the self-declared “home of creative culinary concoctions and all things Deep Fried.”
However, the deep-fried cereal does not seem to be getting the same enthusiasm many have for say fried Oreos or fried pickles. One patron wrote “the pool of grease in the bottom of the basket made me clutch my heart a little,” adding “it definitely isn’t something I’d go out of my way to buy.”
The San Diego Fair goes until July 4, offering deep-fried cereal. Then the fried treat will make its way to the Orange County Fair and the Los Angeles County Fair. (International Business Times)
