Footballer plays on despite half-time heart attack, Lingfield FC’s Danny Oakins enjoyed a fantastic afternoon in his team’s FA Cup clash against Uckfield last weekend – so much so that even a heart attack couldn’t persuade him to come off the pitch.

The 32-year-old right-back was a key man in his side’s 4-2 victory in the preliminary round Cup match, and was determined to stay on the pitch despite chest pains that came on during half-time.

Oakins, who is currently in hospital in Farnborough undergoing tests, complained to a team-mate that his breathing was tight, but he played on to help his team go through.

It was only when he went to hospital later that evening, still feeling poorly, that he was examined by doctors who told him what had happened.

“The doctors reckon he had it at half-time – and he played better in the second half than the first,” Lingfield manager Dixie Dean – no joke – told the Surrey Mirror. “He carried on playing and I knew nothing about it.

“He said to one of the boys that his breathing was a bit tight, but he had a beer after the game. He didn’t even know he was having a heart attack at the time.”

Team-mate Gareth Graham added: “It was only when he called me on Sunday to say he was in hospital that we realised how serious it could have been.
