At that point, however, the linebacker suffered total brain freeze. Rather than cross over into the opposition end zone, he somehow got confused and started running back towards his own team.

Most of the Towson team couldn’t believe their luck: all they had to do was let him get back into his own end zone and he’d concede a ‘safety’, which gives two points to the opposition.

But one or two of Towson’s players suffered from an equally crazy moment: rather than let their opponent score them two cheap points they decided to tackle him, successfully driving him off the pitch just after he made it back over the half-way line.

Both sets of players then started rounding on their own team-mates for their foolishness, though Kent State’s players seemed to see the funny side more – and Parker’s own reaction shows clearly that he couldn’t believe what he’d just done.

But the story wasn’t finished quite yet: it turns out that the referees were having just as bad a start to the season. When an attacking team is forced to punt – normally a last resort when they are about to lose the ball – they aren’t allowed to benefit from it if their opponents fail to hang on to it. As soon as Towson failed to catch the ball cleanly the play was dead.
